Sudanese People in Egypt: Racism Renewed with Every Crisis

Nour Khalil, executive director of Refugees Platform in Egypt, notes that such comments exist and continue, rising whenever there are crises or calls to receive refugees. He adds: “Some or most of the comments are copied, with a huge amount of misinformation being promoted about refugee numbers or the services provided to them, whether through nationalist appeals or claims that they will cause an economic problem.” Responding to the economic cost promoted by some as a reason to reject the presence of Sudanese people in Egypt, Khalil says that all migrants in Egypt of all nationalities number 6 million, while those registered as refugees and asylum seekers are fewer than 250,000. Migrants are also treated as foreigners in all matters, such as education, which is paid in foreign currency.
